We follow the guidelines of the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI), which sets the standard for proper, long-lasting pavement installation and design.
Minimum ICPI specifications require the landscaper to lay down four inches of crushed stone, compacted to provide a foundation for the patio. The crushed stone is followed by 1” of granite sand to create a smooth surface. We finish our patios by installing polymeric sand in all the joints. Our quotes will include all necessary excavation to achieve the proper elevation for the new paver patio.
We then wet down the polymeric sand to bind everything together. We use polymeric sand instead of mortar because polymeric sand is flexible. It adjusts to the natural expansion and contraction that happens as the weather heats up and cools down.
We could offer a cheaper price if we chose not to follow these guidelines, of course, but we can’t do that in good conscience. Customers can’t tell the difference on Day 1, but by year 5, a patio that doesn’t follow these guidelines is going to settle. It will become wavy or bumpy and will hold water every time it rains. Instead of enhancing the value of your home and giving you a tranquil space to enjoy, it will transform into an eyesore that makes your home harder to use or sell.
When the job is done right, a proper paver patio can be a lifetime product and require very little maintenance. While we can’t control all environmental or climate issues, we can build to account for those possibilities. Our patios are built to last.
